We run the full media mix for functional, energy, hydration and better-for-you drink brands — paid social, search, retail media, shopper activation and programmatic. And we can prove the category behaves differently: of the 30,884 beverage ads in our vault, 39.5% sell a version of the buyer rather than the product. Across the rest of food and beverage, that figure is 18%.

Beverage is the largest category in our vault and the most distinctive. Buyers are not choosing a drink, they are choosing an outcome: more energy, better focus, fewer hangovers, a body that recovers. The advertising knows this in theory. In practice, the second most common thing a beverage ad leads with is a discount.
The category's single biggest claim, and the most crowded ground on the shelf.
Second place. One in six beverage ads leads with a price cut rather than a reason to prefer you.
Where the category is heading, and still a fraction of where the spend actually goes.
Powerful when the product earns it. Hollow when every competitor claims the same.
Primary driver across 30,884 beverage ads in the Schaefer AdVault, queried 2 September 2026. A brand competing on Energy is arguing with roughly 5,400 other ads that say the same word.
This is the concrete version of category expertise. We classify every ad in the vault by the motivation it appeals to. Inside beverage alone, the segments are near-opposites: some sell the person you become, others sell the thing in the can. Run the wrong one and the media is fine while the creative quietly fails.
The two at the bottom are the point. Sparkling water runs 77.1% basic or promotional creative and coffee runs 69% — those categories sell the liquid, and a growth-tier campaign will underperform in them. A generalist arriving from energy drinks would get that exactly backwards. More on why that matters →
The AdVault is our own corpus of live food and beverage advertising, classified by the motivation each ad appeals to. It is free, public and searchable before you ever speak to us, which means nothing on this page has to be taken on trust.
The largest single category in the vault, by some distance.
Including whoever you are about to be compared against on the shelf.
Against 18% across the rest of food and beverage. Beverage is the outlier.
Across 1,372 brands and 12,779 landing pages. Free to search.
Beverage brands put 18,699 new ads live in the last 90 days. The median brand launched 29. The top decile launched more than 208. If your team ships six a month, no bid strategy closes that gap — your competitors are simply running more attempts at finding the thing that works.
New ads live per quarter. Comfortable, and comfortably beaten.
Seven times the median. This is who you are bidding against.
Concepts per motivation the research surfaced, not resizes of one idea.
Schaefer AdVault, ads whose run start falls inside the last 90 days across 177 beverage brands. The vault indexes ads observed running, so this measures live creative volume rather than everything a brand produced.
Beverage rarely wins on one platform. Demand gets built in the feed, converted on search, and turned into trial on the shelf, and the three have to argue the same thing. Research is the input to the creative, which is the input to the media, which is measured back against it.
Category-scale survey work plus qualitative, fielded and analyzed by our own team. In beverage the question is almost always which outcome the buyer is actually purchasing, and whether the category has already claimed it.

Most agencies do not offer one because they do not want the pressure. Ours is the reason we turn work down — it only holds up if we are honest at intake about whether we can move your number.
ROAS, CPA, conversion rate or revenue growth, named before anything launches.
Not at signing. Research runs first, then the three months begin when the ads do.
100% of our agency fees for the period. No negotiation, no exceptions.
We'll tell you whether the research says you're right.
Non-alcoholic beverage and the rest of food and beverage only. We don't take clients outside the category, which is the reason the category knowledge is worth anything.
And if your segment sells the liquid rather than the outcome, we will tell you that on the first call and build to it instead.
